10 tips if you and your dog are moving

10 gode råd hvis du og din hund skal flytte

Moving from one place to another is in the top 5 list of the most stressful things in life – and that doesn't just apply to you, but to a large extent also to your four-legged best friend.
But how can you make a move as dog-friendly as possible?

DogCoach has collected some good advice for you here.

1. Avoid letting the dog participate in the move on the day itself, if possible have the dog looked after in the days leading up to and during until things are calm again.

2. Make sure the dog's basket or blanket is placed out front so that it has a place that smells familiar and is safe from the start.

3. Take a good walk before you come home, make sure the dog is tired and well-stimulated before introducing it to a new home.

4. A good idea might be to let the dog be on a leash the first few times in the garden, let it explore and discover in peace and quiet – but under supervision. That way you also discover any challenges such as neighbor dogs, children, passersby, etc. and can teach the dog from the start that it doesn't need to bark in the garden because it becomes unsafe.

5. Think about having a few days off with your dog in the new home – this will give it time to get used to everything before it has to be alone when you go back to work.

6. Keep in mind that training alone at home is also important here, even if the dog does not have problems in that direction beforehand.
The dog needs to feel comfortable in the new environment, so spend some time walking in slightly shorter intervals to get it used to being comfortable alone before you go back to work.

7. You may want to have a good and calm dog companion visit for the first few days, so the dog can have a “support teacher” to experience everything new with.

8. Take extra care that your dog does not run away if it runs loose on a walk – some dogs will try to find their way home and may get lost along the way.

9. Remember to get new dog tags made with your new address

10. A dog is a creature of habit, so quickly create a good, safe environment in the new place that is similar to what the dog is used to from before.
