Which dogs swim?

There are now a multitude of options for how to activate and train your dog. One of the activities that is gaining more and more momentum is dog swimming. But what can dog swimming do? And which dogs is it good for?

DogCoach has visited Frederikssund Dog Center in North Zealand to learn more about the concept. Here we met owner Jan Rasmussen, who guided us through a typical dog swimming session. When asked what types of dogs go to dog swimming, Jan answers: "All types of dogs do, actually. We have everything from Chihuahuas to the big Great Danes that come and swim, even those who don't like water can learn it."

Swimming training in a pool is very different and gentler than if the dog, for example, plays on the beach and swims. In the hall, the water is heated to 22 degrees, which means that the muscles are warm and can relax.
Swimming is a super gentle way for dogs with leg problems, arthritis or being overweight to exercise without putting strain on joints and tendons.

The first swim

  • The dog is showered with warm water to remove any dirt and grime.
  • The dog will be given a life jacket and a collar/leash that can float.
  • After that, the dog can walk up the ramp and stand on a small platform where it can lie down but at the same time stand in the water.
  • The dog then swims along the edge on the line, while the owner walks alongside until it is safe.
  • Some dogs prefer to swim for toys or balls, this way the dog learns that it is safe and fun to get into the pool.
  • After a lane or two, the dog takes a break before continuing.
  • When the dog is finished, wash it again with plain water and dry it.

5 things dog swimming can do for your dog's health

  • Your dog is activated in a different way than when he runs and plays. The distraction is good for the dog.
  • Dog swimming is a fantastic form of exercise that improves fitness and is gentle on the body.
  • Dogs with arthritis or joint problems therefore benefit greatly from dog swimming because they get to move their joints without putting strain on them. This way, muscles and joints are maintained.
  • The dog activates muscles it doesn't normally use.
  • Dog swimming strengthens the dog's back.

There are no restrictions on which dogs can learn to swim. Dogs of all ages and breeds can take part in the dog pool. A half-hour swim costs 170,- including washing, swimming, drying and cleaning. Some dogs swim regularly every week, while others show up every now and then when the mood strikes. All you need to bring is a change of shoes, rain gear and a towel.

Enjoy 😊
