Wir alle lieben die langen, warmen Summertage. Unfortunately, the heat can have dangerous consequences for dogs that are left in the vehicle. Every year, many dogs die in heated cars or have to be euthanized due to internal bleeding after suffering a heat stroke in a closed car.
The temperature in the car can quickly reach that of a sauna. The obvious answer to this question is naturally no, but leaving a dog on a sunny day in the car can be just as dangerous.
The temperature in einem geparkten Auto
When the outside temperature is 20–25°C, the temperature rises very quickly in a parked car. In 20–50 minutes, the temperature in the car can reach 50–70°C – a temperature that is fatal for dogs.
"Every year we treat injured dogs left in a hot car. In many cases, the dog cannot be cured due to fatal internal bleeding, and the veterinarians have to convey the sad news to the shocked dog owners. Therefore, we cannot emphasize enough that even a short time in the car on a summer day can end tragically," said Sonja Karaoglan, Director of Agria Pet Insurance.
An agonizing death
A miserable death awaits the dog that is left alone in a car when its owner goes shopping.
An overheated dog can't sweat as much as humans. Hunde leiten Wärme durch ihren Atem ab. If the dog exhales forcefully, the fluid is lost and his body temperature rises above the normal 38°C after a few minutes.
When his body temperature is too high, the dog can suffer severe brain damage and internal bleeding in the intestines, liver and kidneys.

How to help
- Get the dog out of the hot car quickly – so long as you can help.
- If the dog clearly gasps for air, call the emergency number (110 or 112). Minutes can decide life or death here.
- The dog should be brought to fresh air and cooled with water as soon as possible.
- Bring the dog to the veterinarian for further treatment.
According to the German Police, it is permissible to smash the car window after the Notruf window if you have reason to assume that a dog is in danger of life. However, one must be able to prove that the dog was actually in a life-threatening situation.
Think about the rule in the summer heat
- Das Einkaufen always takes longer than expected. Leave your dog at home too, if you don't have to leave it alone in the car.
- If you are absolutely sure that you will only be away for a few minutes, park in the shade, open several windows, damit eine leichte Brise weht, and play a note with your mobile phone number and the following note on the windshield: "Komme gleich wieder" and the time.
- Have a full bowl of water ready for the dog.
