We all know it, the weather is bad, we've had a long day at work, you're hungover, the kids are tired and cranky, or the car has broken down. The end result is that Fido can't get out and get active outdoors.
There can be lots of good advice on how to keep your dog active indoors. It must be mentioned that it can never replace or make up for daily walks and play activities with other members of the same species.
Make sure your dog always gets his daily walks. But a dog doesn't need to exercise for hours every day, in fact, quite the opposite. Brain activity makes dogs tired and full of experiences.
Here are a few tips on how you can activate your dog at home:
Save treats:
- Lock the dog in another room or behind a child gate and go around hiding treats in the living room. Only your imagination (and general rules) set the limits.
- You can place treats on shelves, behind the sofa, on chairs, etc.
- Hide treats in the garden (some people just spread the food on the lawn), but you can easily make it a little more challenging and fun for your dog: for example, hide treats in and around the shed or in the driveway.
- Here you can simultaneously activate the family's children and ask them to hide the treats. Then you have both the children and the dog activated at the same time.
- Remember to make sure that the dog is not tempted to jump up and get hurt. This must of course be done under orderly conditions and without the risk of the dog falling down, hurting itself or the like.
Use activity toys:
- You can buy both "balls" and other toys in which you can put food, which the dog can easily spend some time picking out and eating, you can buy more of these here on DogCoach's website.
- Buy some of the activity toys where the dog has to solve tasks, including one of the popular names for toys with tasks: Nina Ottosson's dog toys. Remember, however, that hers is made to be an activity you do together with your dog and should not be left alone with it.
Give the dog a bone
All dogs love meat bones. Buy a delicious and fresh one from the butcher or local grocery store. They rarely cost more than 10 - 20 kr, and are far healthier than all the dried versions you can also buy. Let the dog lie with it and enjoy it and spend time peeling the bone.
