December 6: How to teach your dog to walk nicely on a leash 🐾🚶‍♂️

🎄 Here on December 6th, the Advent calendar is about a small but important detail that can make walking your dog much easier: How to hold the leash and reward your dog for walking nicely on a leash! 🐕✨

Walk nicely on a leash – why is it important?

We all know the situation: The dog's energy is high, and it quickly turns into a tug and a chase back and forth when you try to get him to walk nicely on a leash. It can quickly become a struggle, and in the worst case, you trip over your dog when he walks in front of you! 😅

To make the walk more enjoyable for both you and your dog, it's important to consider how you reward your dog while you're out for a walk. And it's not just about how you use treats, but also how you hold the leash.

The location of the leash and the reward

When training your dog to walk nicely on a leash, it can be tempting to hold the leash in the same hand that the dog is walking on, and then reward with the opposite hand. But this can be challenging! 🚶‍♂️ If you hold the leash in the same hand that the dog is walking on, the dog will often end up walking in front of you, as it is naturally attracted to the other hand that has the treats.

Therefore, it is a good idea to hold the leash in the opposite hand from where the dog is walking . That way, it will be easier for you to reward on the side, i.e. where you want the dog to be.. When you reward, do it with the hand that is closest to the dog. 👐

Why does it work?

By changing hand placement, it becomes more natural for your dog to stay by your side, as you reward them with the hand that is closer to their head.
